Alright guys, it’s time to get down on one knee. You think she’s perfect, and she thinks you’re cute, charming, and an all-around winner. Like Beyonce said, if you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it – and that’s exactly what you intend to do. But wait! Only fools rush in to proposing. This process takes time, thought, and dedication to make sure that it’s the moment she’ll never forget. So seriously, don’t screw it up – and believe us, there are a lot of ways that your proposal can go wrong. Need some hints on what not to do? We’ve got you covered!
1. You hide the ring in food
DON’T hide the ring in food. Seriously, don’t do it. There are a zillion things that could go wrong – a chipped tooth, choking, an ingested diamond… The list goes on and on. Plus, you just (hopefully) spent two month’s salary on that rock, so do you really want to see it covered in chocolate mousse? She also probably won’t be thrilled to have to lick the ring clean before putting it on her finger. So just take our word for it – avoid the trip to the emergency room and go with another proposal idea.
2. You propose on the big screen at a sporting event
Unless both you guys are super-duper-extra-hardcore sports fans and you can’t imagine getting engaged anywhere else, skip the big-screen sports game proposal. It’s been done a thousand times, and isn’t the most private or heartfelt of proposals. Plus, thousands of people in the audience are watching her reaction – if she’s surprised or shy, there’s a chance she may be more embarrassed than thrilled.
3. You propose on April Fool’s Day
Even if you’re actually proposing for real, proposing on April Fool’s Day doesn’t really set a good precedent for your future marriage. And what if she says yes, then yells “APRIL FOOLS!”? That would be awkward. Just wait until April 2nd.
4. You propose via text, Twitter, Facebook, or anything where you don’t have to see her
“I <3 U, Will U Marry Me?” There’s really no excuse for this. Expect an “R U Kidding?” reply.
5. You ask her dad first – and get rejected
While a sweet and thoughtful tradition, there’s a certain amount of danger in asking her father for her hand before you actually ask her. If he says yes, then you’re golden; but if he says no? What do you do then? Plus, then her dad is telling you to your face that you’re not good enough for his girl – a move that is sure to put some strain on your relationship to the family, and perhaps even with your fiancee-to-be. Judge for yourself whether or not this is a good move – if you have a good relationship with her father and you have no reason to worry about him saying no, then go for it. However if you’re unsure, maybe it’s best to talk it over with your girlfriend first.
6. You propose after your second date
If it’s your second date and you’re ready to get down on one knee, maybe you should reconsider. There’s a lot you don’t know about this girl – are you really going to want to spend the rest of your life discovering all the little things about her that drive you crazy? Maybe it’s a little pessimistic of me, but you’re better off waiting 1-2 more years.
7. You’re wasted
If you wake up the next morning and she has a ring on her finger that you don’t remember giving her, you probably didn’t have the best proposal in the world.
